When buying a tai chi sword (or any other sword for that matter) there are certain things to consider. Think carefully about what you will be using it for to avoid the disappointment of ending up with the wrong type. If buying online and have any doubts contact the vendor for advice.
A Few Considerations:
What’s it for?
- swordplay
- cutting practice
- tai chi sword form
- display
Does it need to be fully functional?
- full tang
- sharp blade
- dulled blade
Swordplay/Cutting Practice
For use in a martial art where there will be contact a quality sword with a high carbon steel blade of “full tang” (blade extends within length of handle) is needed. Poor quality swords can be dangerous as the blade can snap or become detached from the grip upon contact. If the sword is for cutting practice then the blade needs to be very sharp, whereas in swordplay the blade may be dulled.
Tai Chi Sword Form
Fully functional swords are expensive and not necessary for practising a tai chi form, alternatively you may settle for a more reasonably priced sword with a dulled steel blade. There are wooden swords for beginners to start off with for obvious safety reasons, and there are even collapsible ones for ease of transport. The two main types of tai chi swords are the jian (a straight double edged sword) and the dao (a slightly curved single edged blade).
Display
If you are buying a sword solely for display purposes, then appearance will be more important. An authentic sword can tend to be a little pricey, but there are decent replica swords around which can be very ornate and impressive on display, whether on a stand or wall mounted. Many have a stainless steel blade which is less prone to rusting and therefore easier to maintain.
Finally: Be aware of any laws or restrictions relating to the purchase or ownership of any type of weapon, and read the terms and conditions of sale carefully.
